A little deception?,
I purchased this book for my husband after hearing about it on a satellite radio golf show. One of the draws was that the book gave the reder access to videos that complemented and illustrated the topics and techniques in each chapter. When I got the book, imagine my disappointment to learn (after the fact) that the videos are only accessible through the use of a smart phone! We do not have a smart phone and do not plan on getting one in the near future so we are missing out on one of the features that convinced me to buy this book in the first place. I think that the authors/publishers should let the buying public know ahead of time that only smart phone owners have access to the videos. Nothing was mentioned on the radio show and there was nothing in Amazon’s written description that forewarned potential customers. I am sure my husband will still enjoy the book, but not to the extent that was intended.

|Good information, but video needs to be available for all devices,
I would agree with the sentiments of one reviewer above. I purchased the book mainly because I am a big Tom Watson fan and the instruction in the book is good, but I would have liked to have seen the videos. I have Kindle PC and Kindle for Android and neither support the embedded video. One of the main selling points is the use of the videos to illustrate key points, so Amazon should make buyers aware that the videos are not supported on all Kindle applications.

|A beautiful book and helpful information from one of golf’s all-time greats!,
I have always been a fan of Tom Watson. He has provided us with a lot of beautiful and exciting golf over the years and from the mid-1970s through the mid-1980s he won two Masters, a US Open, and FIVE (count `em) Open Championships (the so-called British Open). He is among the all-time golf elite. My first set of new clubs was the Ram Investors he endorsed during these years. They were good clubs and I liked them. I chose them over the Ping-Eye 2s and I couldn’t afford Nicklaus’s MacGregors. I still have them, actually. Watson was a brilliant short game player and I have used the teachings from his book on the short game for decades.
Now he provides us with a beautiful book on the full swing. He has been telling folks about the breakthrough he came to in his swing that has rejuvenated his game and got him as close as you can get to winning as 6th Open Championship without actually getting the claret jug. I was among the billion people (or more) rooting for this great golfer and that courageous and brilliant effort.
The golf swing is a very complex and demanding use of the human body that requires an intricate sequencing of muscles and balance that must be done in one smooth motion. But this is all controlled in the golfer’s mind. You simply must have a strong mental image of how the swing works and what it feels like. That is the purpose of a book like this. To prepare and develop one’s mind with the right images, the right understanding of what you are after, and to provide techniques and exercises that can help you develop the feel for the right way to accomplish and effective and repeatable swing.
This book has terrific pictures by Dom Furore of Tom Watson performing all the things he wants you to understand. This includes the proper images and images of things NOT to do. I also appreciate the inclusion of pictures of Watson earlier in his career and comparing them with pictures of what Watson is doing now so we can clearly see the changes. And the inclusion of pictures of other golfers to make certain points is also very useful.
Mr. Watson has also worked well with Nick Seitz to produce a very readable and clear text in Watson’s voice. Key points are highlighted as if with a yellow highlighter. The captions of the pictures are quite good. The text will help you see the pictures more clearly and understand the point Watson wants you to understand. Another feature of this book is phone app you can download and then point your smartphone camera at these tags at various points in the book and see videos. The bigger the screen on your phone and the faster your connection the better these videos will be for you.
The course of instruction makes sense. Watson begins with the core idea of putting the head of the golf club on the ball; that is, the arc of the swing and your spine angle. In chapter 2 he shows you the three basic grips that various golfers use, how you should set-up to the ball, and where to place the ball in relation to your feet (your stance).
Chapter 3 takes you through the swing from address through what he calls his secret. That is what he changed in his swing so that he avoids that reverse “C” position and hitting the ball out to the right. Chapter 4 discusses on how to select and fashion shots. This includes deciding when to draw and fade (hook and slice) and by how much. He also shows you how and when to hit the ball high and how to keep it low (very useful in the wind).
Chapter 5 is for those of us who have matured along with Mr. Watson (he is five years older than me). He shows us some stretches, how to strengthen our grip, and several easy swing adjustments to hit the ball farther and get back some of those yards the years and the stiffness of aging have taken away. Chapter 6 is all about drills to improve every aspect of your golf swing. Nothing very hard and all geared towards developing your mental images and feel for what we all try to do when we swing the golf club with a serious purpose.
Chapter 7 contains several image sequences of how the full swing looks from behind, looking back from the fairway, standing in front of Watson, and standing behind him.
This is a beautifully done book with great information from one of golf’s all time greats after a lifetime of work and thinking about the game. Most useful and I am delighted to have a copy!
